If you are a thrift-a-holic like me, you’ll understand how hard it is sometimes to walk into a good thrift store and restrain yourself from buying out about half the merchandise.
I have become aware, especially lately, that it’s all too easy to fall into excess with thrifting. The trouble is that when things are cheap, it’s easy to get lazy about that whole “thinking through my purchase” thing. And I personally want to get better at this, if for no other reason than that I stop stuffing my wardrobe with pieces I don’t massively love and will not wear.
Hence, this new series.
The idea is that every week (or so) I will take a trip to the thrift shop with the objective being to purchase only one thing. That means I have to really think through my decision, and prioritize the item that I feel is most worth taking up space at my house. It could be an article of clothing, an accessory, a houseware - anything. But it has to be only ONE thing. That’s the challenge.
I’m hoping this will help train my mind to think through every purchase a bit more carefully, whether it’s at the thrift store or not.
I’m going to try it for a month on the blog, and see how well it’s received by my readers. If it goes really well, I thought it might be cool to make it into a weekly link-up, providing there was enough interest.
So here’s my first ever One Thrifted Thing find!
(it was between this, a stripy sweater dress, and some pretty fantastic huge 80’s earrings. I’m going to check next week and see if the earrings are still there, as they were pretty rad)
This long-length, cream-coloured vintage cardigan is really pretty - I feel like these pictures don’t really do it justice. The detail in the ribbing lends interest and I like the shape of it. I chose this in the end because I know it’s something I will wear a lot and can adapt to most seasons of the year.
Wondering how to wear an oversized cardigan? Here’s some inspiration I’m drawing on.

^^ Over a pretty dress (in winter, add in tights and substitute close-toed heels for the sandals!) ^^

^^ With a pretty knit top, leggings, and ankle boots. ^^

^^ With scarf, sweater, skinny jeans, boots. ^^

^^ With a simple top and high-waisted shorts, pants, or skirt. ^^

Do you have trouble with excess when thrifting (or just generally?) How do you decide what’s worth buying and what isn’t? I’m interested to know :)
Have a great day!

Katie, I've noticed the same thing myself. I've bought so many things at thrift shops that I love and wear/use all the time, but I also have too many things that I brought home and never wore, or never used. It's easy for that to happen when you only spent 7 dollars! So I love this series. And I think you picked a beautiful sweater. Plus, it will be perfect to wear as your belly grows!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this idea! And your sweater. I found your blog through the Dearest Lou link up and have loved looking through all of your outfit pictures! I adore thrifting also, and I've realized that it makes me value quantity over quality, since everything is so cheap. I had to take a break from shopping for awhile and realize how much I already have. But this Thrift One Thing idea is perfect for being aware and still having fun shopping.
ReplyDeleteGREAT idea! Can't wait for this series!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea. I love thrifting also but have found if I'm not choosey my wardrobe starts to look VERY 2nd hand. LOVE the sweater choice! Super neutral and practical but stylish. Can't wait to see how you wear it!
ReplyDeleteI totally have the same problem. I love this idea though! That sweater is so pretty I love the detail. Can't wait to see the outfits you come up with!

Oh, wow! Could you just send me an ounce of your self-restraint? I am not sure I could ever do just ONE item. If that were all I found, then yes, but I have a hard time passing up a good deal! ;)
ReplyDeleteThe cardigan is lovely, I can just imagine how pretty it will look with your coloring. And I'm really hoping that the '80s earrings are still there when you go back, as I cannot wait to see them!!! ~Sarah
I am in love with long comfy sweaters like those! I recently found a wool Banana Republic one at our Good Will. Gosh, I adore it... and thrifting ;)
